Traditionally, it has been used as a blood builder, weakness, anemia, fever, poor appetite, and eventually, diabetes.
This herb has been held in high regard for many centuries throughout Mesoamerica. It was featured in the General History of the Things of New Spain in the 1580s!
Although made famous as a diabetes remedy in modern times, it was used to treat a great many ailments in the not too distant past.
For its effectiveness with diabetes, it slows down carbohydrate absorption reducing unwanted spikes in blood sugar, and likely supports the liver as well to help stabilize blood sugar.
Not only that, it aids in poor digestion and reduces liver toxicity - two important features for the modern-day human!
- Scientific Name: Hintonia latiflora
- Directions: I would suggest the following 3 options as best practices for this herb:1) Chop/saw the stems into smaller pieces with a bandsaw, if available; alternatively, chip away with a small hand axe2) Soak the stems in cold water overnight. Strain and drink the following day and repeat with the same stems for at least 3 days. Suggested dosage: Use about 4oz of woody stem per quart of water. Drink the entire quart over the length of a day.3) Simmer about 4oz of woody stems in 1-1.5 qt of water for 30-45 minutes. Allow to sit, covered, for 1-4 hr, then strain and drink, 1/2 cup, 1-4x/day.
